"Futa-ai" refers to a shade of purple created by layering indigo and safflower dyes.
This color has existed since the Heian period and was notably used in the attire of the aristocracy. At the time, purple was considered a noble color within the court ranking system and was a "forbidden color" (*kinjiki*) permitted only for those of specific high status.
D'Artisan has recreated this traditional Japanese color, "Futa-ai," to produce an original denim fabric. The warp yarns are dyed by layering natural indigo and madder root, achieving a purple hue with remarkable depth. The natural color irregularities—characteristic of organic dyes—accentuate the fabric's unique texture.
Both the warp and weft utilize #6 count uneven "slub" yarns.
Woven carefully over time on shuttle looms in Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture, the fabric achieves a substantial, weighty feel and a distinctive texture.
